Breath of Life Watercolors
watercolor on paper with gold enamel paint
In Genesis we are told that God breathed the breath of life into Adam. Neshama is the Hebrew word that means life breath. The words for breath in Hebrew all correspond to aspects of the human soul. When we simply notice our breath it returns us to the present moment.
It is a miracle that our breath enters and departs and reenters without our control. Life is bestowed upon us in every moment.
These watercolors try to depict the flow of breath and the richness of being in the moment.
Each Fall, near the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hoshanah and Yom Kippur, I paint a series of watercolors that help me become more present. Painting these series of spiritual watercolors helps me to look and little deeper, become more grateful and to let go and go with the flow.
